Hip-hop, soul, a little bit of punk.

It's not fair. Basement Jaxx aren't even releasing an album anytime soon and yet they still managed to woo rapper/PhD Roxanne Shanté out of retirement for one of the best 12'' singles of the year. Eschewing typical Jaxx dance maximalism, "Make Me Sweat" sticks to a grindingly simple house beat with a titular mantra that was sadly lacking on the back half of Crazy Itch Radio. Although the single somehow slipped under my radar when it was released, it has been in heavy rotation ever since. Basement Jaxx, all is forgiven.

In unrelated music news, it looks like Mason and I can finally set aside our little bit country/little bit rock 'n roll differences. The inspiration for this indie armistice? None other than Pantha du Prince whose meisterstück remix of Animal Collective's "Peacebone" should cause similar truces to spontaneous breakout between musical enclaves across the globe. To further seal our détente, The Field [who, coincidentally, played Annie (*heart*) during his set] will be dropping his remix of Battle's "Tonto" next month.

And one final thought for the day: Radiohead, it seems, have finally wrapped up studio work on LP7. Given they are out of contract with their record label and Thom's championing of environmental causes, I predict a digital only release for their new album.

Umm... iTunes is now the 3rd largest music retailer in the country.

And I don't think Radiohead really needs to care about record sales anymore.

Agreed that they don't care about money, but consider:

Most likely, the ecological impact of a CD and CD player is far less than that of a computer, the infrastructure of the Internet and an iPod or other mp3 playing device.

Selling at only one outlet limits you to, at best, 8% of the total market. There are likely Radiohead fans who would have absolutely no access to the new album. Likewise, why not just press and sell CD directly to their hardcore fans. They could make a lot more money off of that 100,000 people directly than through a major label contract.

3rd, that is a good example of why I don't like Radiohead. No sense of humor. Inflated sense of worth. Like they're really fixing things.

Perhaps, but that still doesn't mean that all of the plastic in the CD containers are wasteful. I can see Radiohead shipping out CD's to fans in custom paper cases or selling them at concerts.

And I agree that Radiohead are humorless, but I don't see why you jump to the notion that they have an inflated sense of selfworth. They are (hypothetically, of course) changing their behavior to accord with their beliefs -- nothing wrong with that.

On a slightly related note I listened to Hail to the Thief the other day -- man, what an ugly, ugly record.
