Fantasy Football Talkback Week #1

FOOTBALL!

No real surprises to report from the Skydiving Strippers draft -- although Mark made the interesting decision to enlist Peyton Manning in the first round and Chicago's defense (!) in the fourth. We will see how that plays out in the upcoming weeks...

Week #1 will host a rematch of last year's 3rd place playoff game between Brad and me -- which is probably fitting since my team is a rehash of players I loved from the year before. Unfortunately, my ace in the sleeve, Marques Colston, is no longer mislisted as a TE and I am going to need every computer glitch in the book to defeat Brad again. Luckily I have LaDainian... may he recover quickly from whatever terrible affliction he will suffer in the first couple of weeks.

Trevor and Ian are going heads up in a battle of the siblings. I am going to bet money that Ian will pull off the early season victory, if only because this is will be the only week he has players selected for every slot. And because Trevor's has once again aligned himself with the devil Tom Brady.

Finally, I am curious how are two dark horse candidates are going to fare this year. Trevor and Brad were giving major props to Eric's picks in the live draft and Mark's shear disdain for the sport is sure to give him some sort of competitive edge.

Brad, any thoughts on Week #1, fantasy of otherwise?

Yeah. I put a lot of thought into that draft. What I did was allow Yahoo's computers to pick the best available player in every round. I figure it was a good strategy. We will, after all, all be working for computers in some slave capacity in the future.

Next time, I want in. Unless, of course, this is some boys only club.

Sorry Nell -- it wasn't an all boys club, but you were in Scotland when we pulled this together.

And to be honest I didn't know you liked football.

the more the merrier, girls are definitely allowed.

my take on the draft:

V for Vicktory

Any team with LT (not Lawrence Taylor) is a good fantasy team. Logan is looking good, if only because he was lucky enough to get the randomly assigned first pick in the draft. The rest of his team isn't looking that bad, although depth could be a problem, there's a significant dropoff from the starting lineup to the bench.

Non-participants

Mark eschewed traditional fantasy draft wisdom by not taking a running back until the 6th round. And, if there's a weakness on his team it's at the running back position. The strategy did allow him to get the #1 player at every other position, however. Peyton Manning, Steve Smith, Antonio Gates, Adam Vinatieri, and Chicago's Defense are all the concensus number ones at their respective fantasy slots. There's a Ben Folds Five song called "The Battle of Who Could Care Less" in High School I always associated it with Joe Taylor, but Mark's involvement in fantasy football has given it a whole new meaning for me.

Team RacecaR

I ended up with a lot of players I hadn't really intended on picking going into the draft. I'm not really sure what that means, but I guess we'll see. I spent the first 4 picks on running backs which gave me, what I consider to be the best top-to-bottom backfield in the fantasy league. It also left me in a bit of a bind at wide receiver. I love Reggie Wayne, but I'm not convince that Javon Walker and Calvin Johnson (Detroit Lions rookie) will be great. I was also the last team to pick a quarterback, but Donovan McNabb was the number 1 fantasy qb until he got hurt last year, so I'm happy to have him.

U Bent Allen Wijfjes

Trevor's team name means (as far as I can tell) You Are All Women in Dutch. (So Trevor is definitely accepting Nell.) Trevor is the cock of the fantasy league's walk. He won it all last year. He's got a strong team this year too. The only real weakness I can see is that it's full of New England Patriots.

Marco No!

Yes, Eric's team name is an irreverant reference to my former West High counselor and alleged kid toucher Marco Herrera. But really, would you expect anything less. Eric's team is solid all around, I was his consultant on draft day, and we were looking for low-maintenance players, I think we built a reliable team that he can neglect all he wants.

Full-Blown AIDS

Ian made the consious decision not to show up for the live draft, thinking that perhaps the computer would do better than he could. That may or may not be true, but I do find it interesting just how many of Ian's "decisions" involve him not doing anything. . . . Ian actually ended up with a pretty good team, a lot of the players he got are ones I wanted. The only real downside for those who weren't there to draft is that the computer picked kickers way too early and picked a backup for all postitions, including kicker, defense, and TE. none of which are necessary in a league with 6 people in it.

It's Week 1. Everyone's got a chance.

I would just like to note that Trevor actually lost to Dan Smart last year... what a terrible, terrible playoffs.

Really good analysis Brad. I was looking at my team thinking that I had some star material but then a bunch of player that I picked at the last second... which I did.

Mark may be onto something...

He already has 35 points... and Drew Brees got me 0.

Hopefully LT scores 7 touchdowns.
