Ce n'est pas un match de football

"The Uruguayan FA have this week suspended five of their top officials for six months - including one referee who days earlier had been selected for the World Cup Finals.

Jorge Larrionda was due to be Uruguay's representative in Japan and Korea this summer [World Cup 2002] but Matias Vazquez, president of the Uruguayan Football Association's (AUF) School of Referees, said FIFA would be informed of the ban and that soccer's world governing body would routinely be expected to endorse it - causing Larrionda to miss the tournament"

That may have been one of the most intense football matches I have ever seen. The Beasley goal would have been deliriously cathartic (the only goal ever to be scored by a team of 9), but I am content that the USA team showed some passion after their miserable defeat against the Czech Republic.

With the Czech loss to Ghana, USA is still very much alive. Donovan needs to wake up and take this team out of the group stage.

I hate to be a naysayer... but the U.S.A. still has just one measley point. Italy has four. And the Czech Republic and Ghana have three. All it means is that the U.S. has to win it's next game. But I think we all knew that after that miserable first game.

I'm just sorry that I'm too interesting in my fi... er... girlfriend to be that interested in the World Cup. There's always 2010.

And you know I'm going to be 25 years old in less than two months? That's craziness.

You are right, a US advance is contigent on other games in the group, but in 2002 the USA team ranked second in Group D with 4 points and a goal differential of -1, a scenario that is not unlikely to repeat in 2006. I have faith; the US team played substantially better even with only 9 players on the field.

And what is with this thinly veiled parapraxis? Did you pop the question? Or are you planning to do so before the World Cup is done?

I suggest suggestion #42.

I should also add that the Czech squad is an old team which at full health would have easily dominated this bracket. Instead, they are now going up against the Azzurri without the 6-7 Jan Koeller and the Aston Villa striker Milan Baros.

An Italian win + A USA win = a respectable knock out by Brazil in the elimination round (although let's see if Brazil can bring their A game against Australia)

So, as far as Donovan is concerned, all the fouls in the tie with Italy Saturday night are forgiven.

"Listen, I'm rooting Italy for the rest of the week," he said. "As far as I'm concerned, they're the nicest guys in the world."
