I, of course, was (and perhaps will) post more extensively on this (tomorrow is the due date for one of my papers).
Needless to say, it's a name. As stupid as it sounds, it doesn't matter. It's great to have a philosophy for a name (as Nintendo does), but it's not necessary.
However, it does do well the things good brand name should. It's simple. One syllable. Easy to remember. And vague enough to be attachable to anything, but unique enough to be just that, unique.
More to come...
(Check out evilavatar.com for more of my thoughts. I was actually the first person to submit the news.)
I snagged it off a message board - yeah it is not the real one, but it looked sweet.
Personally, I think Nintendo is taking a gestalt marketing approach that while brilliant on many levels - the visual association of wii with the controller is very savy and opens up amazing avenues for graphic creativity - is quite the oddity when taken as is.
Regardless of what one thinks about the name, Nintendo is doing what it needs to do: getting people talking about Nintendo again. And to that affect it is a brilliant strategy.
I am banking on a complete overhaul of the 'Revolution' system itself. Given the unconventional nature of the controller and the name, the actual unit is looking a little homely. I am expecting something radical come E3.
i love how the collective age of the internet is about eight. if we believe in the maturation of civilizations and humanity, do we hold up the same hope for cyberspace?
i also love how people are willing to sell Nintendo short with every move they make. does anybody even care about the xbox 360 anymore? does the psp still exist? will the ps3 ever exist?
i am going to go brush off my rumble pack and play some star fox 64.

Oh yeah... where did you find that logo?

Oh, duh. That logo is an upside down penis.
A Wii-Wii, I suppose.
Funny. (read: not funny.)
