Urban blight

Florida football coach Urban Meyer, 45, has stepped down, deciding it is in his best interest to focus on his heath and his family.

But Meyer's health problems are not life threatening, a Florida source with knowledge of the situation told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

And Meyer himself told the Times he has "no heart damage."

"But I didn't want there to be a bad day where there were three kids sitting around wondering what to do next. It was the pattern of what I was doing and how I was doing it. It was self-destructive."

WT the fuck F? A man at the top of his game who just signed a six year, $24 million contract extension quits because he's worried about his health, but there's actually nothing wrong with him.

Dr. Rick. You are probably the foremost expert on this in the league, as a physician and someone with a history of heart problems. What do you make of this decision? Is his fear that he's gonna drop dead of a heart attack if he keeps coaching legit, or are his sacred undergarments restricting blood flow to his brain?

I love Urban Meyer. I have said on the record that I wish he was my father. Perhaps, like all fathers, Urban was bound to disappoint his children, but I can't square this shit. What's the real reason he quit? Is he a sore looser? Is he taking a job in the NFL? Is he the next President of the Mormon Church? Governor of Utah? Did he fuck Tiger Woods? What's the deal?

“When your health flashes before your eyes, what’s before you means more than anything,” Urban said. “I have a strong faith that there’s a reason for everything, and God has a plan for us. I just don’t know what it is.”

That makes two of us.

Urban revitalization?

Now I'm even more confused.

NEW ORLEANS -- Florida coach Urban Meyer changed his mind Sunday and said he was taking an indefinite leave of absence instead of resigning. Despite ongoing concerns with his health, he expects to be on the sideline leading the Gators when next season opens.

"I do in my gut believe that will happen," he said Sunday at a Allstate Sugar Bowl news conference.

Offensive coordinator Steve Addazio will run the team during Meyer's absence, but Meyer will coach against Cincinnati on New Year's Day.

"It's full speed ahead. We're going to do everything possible to win this game," he said.

Meyer, 45, said he was offered and encouraged to take a leave of absence earlier in the week. He said being with his players at a "spirited practice" Sunday morning persuaded him not to resign.

"I've accepted this offer to improve my health," said Meyer, who refused to elaborate on his health problems and declined to answer when asked if doctors advised him to stop coaching.

Just an aside: Rachel and I started watching Friday Night Lights S1 last night. I couldn't watch it without thinking that the whole show was at least loosely based on Meyer.

The Urban story is still too strange for me to know what to think about it, except it's pretty obvious that dude is stressed out.

I don't think there is much of a mystery here. Meyer strikes me as a very religious man and must have taken the confluence of bad events (Alabama loss, Tebow loss, hydration loss) as a sign for him to step down from football. What else could explain his completely unthought out resignation and then a slightly more thought out retraction?

i don't really blame the game. College coaching must be hell, but he really should take a cue from the missteps Farve made and really give some thought to retirement before he announces his plans to the public.

Sidenote: FNL is awesome.

i think i pointed out several on a long list of things that "could explain his completely unthought out resignation" and then a slightly more thought out retraction." i can think of more: pending ncaa recruiting violations; taking money/gifts/cars/homes from boosters; etc. the quick retraction could be explained by damage control -- giving people like me a reason not to go looking deeper into this.

what's fnl?
