My cousin read on the internet that they film on the Northwest side of Oahu, so we packed up and made a fieldtrip.
While not immediately obvious, it makes sense that there is no actual "Lost beach." Instead it seems the cinematic beach is made up of various beaches across Oahu and Maui that they seam (pretty flawlessly) into the illusion of one fixed location.
After scouting out the area -- which was a little worrisome as they film near or on a military base -- we spotted the remains of Oceanic Flight 815 tucked behind an airfield landing strip. It was unclear whether we were allowed to be there, but it was too cool to pass up.
As you can see, there is a fence surrounding the wreckage, but we scaled it and walked around the faux-ruins. They have a few more hollowed engines lying around (the lighting didn't turn out well for those pictures) and the last image, you might remember, is of the smuggler plane Boone brilliantly rocked off the side of a cliff.
You can even climb into the main cabin of Oceanic Flight 815, but it was infested with tarantulas so we quickly vacated.
All and all, it was seriously geeky, but ridiculously awesome. And it got me excited for Season 3. I may bitch about Lost every episode, but deep down I unabashedly love it.
