Spellbound

I have this terrible cerebral blind spot when it comes to the word bureaucracy. Even after studying the letters intently for a couple of minutes, I still cannot manage to spell it correctly. It took me 14 tries this afternoon:

burecracy
bureuocracy
bureauocracy
burueacracy
burocracy
beurearocracy
bueurocracy
bureauocracy
buereuocracy
burueaocracy
beuocracy
bureauocracy
bueaurocracy

Hopefully this embarrassing post will cure my terrible affliction. Anybody else have an orthographic nemesis?

[I just spent a half-hour on Wikipedia trying to find the appropriate word and I still don't know if I got it right - but damn linguistics is the coolest thing ever. I want to be able to tell people that I study epenthesis and phonotactics. Or allomorphy and morphosyntax. Did you know that not all Chinese characters are radical-phonetic compounds? Because I surely didn't!]

I am a terrible speller. It says so first thing, right in all my profiles. Being such a bad speller, I have so many orthographic nemesises, that I don't remember very many of them.

Fresh in my mind, though, is colleague because I wrote seven different post-interview thank you notes today, and I never got the word it right. Masterbation is another tricky one, which I know because someone pointed out to me that I spelled it differently twice within one sentence.

At this point, I don't usually bother to learn the spelling, on account of spellcheck and because I biff, like, thirty-five words a day. Don't have time to spellcheck this one, though, on account of Idol!

The problem is that I usually butcher "bureaucracy" (did I get it right this time?) so badly that spellchcek can't even handle it!

And I only know masturbation because of that old high school joke about being a master-debater. yuk yuk!

Good luck with your job search results!

What on earth is "morphosyntax?" I was considering taking a class in the Slavic department, but closed the course guide in fear when I saw that class title - it sounds like an act one would perform in only the most execrable porn flicks. Although I thought the same thing about "prevaricate" when I saw it on the SAT.

Two btws:
-Microsoft Word can go fuck itself - it relentlessly suggests that I change my full name to "evangelist"

-Your 'visual verification' thinger doesn't work with Firefox. Good luck getting more than a dozen cool commenters.

and it is sweet of you to assume that a dozen people would be interested in this blog, let alone that mark and i know that many people.

so anonymous readers:
