I agree it's overhyped. Still probably one of the better alien movies since Alien.
Didn't get much hype here in SLC, so I can't say I thought it was overhyped. The most hype I heard was from Eric telling me how for a while Halo fans thought it was a code name for a Halo movie. I did actually get tired of hearing about that, so maybe you're right.
It was certainly flawed, but I enjoyed it from start to finish, I think it's worth your money.
Eric wasn't entirely wrong: the director was originally slated to direct Halo before the studios pulled the plug. And it shows. The back-half of the movie is littered with designs and concepts that they salvaged from the Halo project.
District 9 is essentially two different (and at times incompatible) movies: a faux sci-fi documentary with a brilliant premise and a startling original setting, and a big dumb action movie that barely attempts to make internal (or external) sense.
Unfortunately, the trailer sold me on the former.
I actually don't disagree with you about any of that, but for me the movie was worth watching due to the strengths you mentioned. Even though the whole Mech Warrior sequence was bad. Like really bad.
