Hide genre while browsing in iTunes 8

I've happily used iTunes since 2003. I think it's great. But, upon updating to iTunes 8, I was rather frustrated to find that the option to hide the genre list while browsing had been removed. When I want to listen to music, I listen to an album by a particular artist. When I want to listen to music by various artists, I make playlists. I've never wanted to sort my library by genera. Ever. Logan is the only one I know who actually utilizes this feature, and he does so by keeping his library pathologically organized--something I'm physiologically incapable of doing. In case you too are bothered by the removal of this feature, this tip is pour vous.

1) Close iTunes
2) Open Terminal.
3) Enter the following text and hit enter:
defaults write com.apple.itunes show-genre-when-browsing -bool FALSE
4) Close Terminal and open iTunes.

You're done! To reverse this operation, just replace 'FALSE' with 'TRUE' in the Terminal command.

PS - Am I the only one who's kind of afraid to activate the new Genius feature?

PPS - You can use this one to turn off the iTunes store arrows:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes show-store-arrow-links -bool FALSE

I played with the Genius. It seems to work pretty damn well to me. Of course, it appears I only like a few bands (based on its recommendations).

Also, I don't quite understand what you mean about needing to hide the genre list. I have had it hidden as well... and it didn't reappear when I updated.

I was able to hide genre also. I wonder what's up with yours. The arrow links one is useful for me though, thanks.

I don't understand why Ben wouldn't just tag all of his music -- it wouldn't be that hard to label everything as EMO.

All join the chorus and voice my approval of the Genius feature [although I don't know why they didn't just call it Smart Shuffle -- it seems like it is diluting the Apple Genius brand].

The Genius Sidebar is far less useful. Having a bunch of links with pricing doesn't exactly inspire me to explore new musical frontiers. It would be much better off if Apple could somehow negotiate a Pandora like feature -- steaming music off the iTunes Store library with the ability to purchase songs that catch your ear.

On a slightly unrelated note, the iPhone 2.1 update has been a huge improvement in 3G receptivity and software performance.

I totally agree with Logan about the naming of Genius. Odd choice.

Yeah. Genius is a weird name. Even stranger... it takes like 20 minutes before you can use it.

How much do you think Apple will make off our personal data?
