Man of Science, Man of Faith
What a spectacularly odd way to start a season. The episode itself was poorly paced and poorly framed, but exciting nevertheless.
Although they really need to stop paying homage to Abrams' pupil dilation shot from the pilot.

further proof that the chemical brothers are still way ahead of their time.
I didn't notice anything about the pacing.
And I bought into their gimmick. All the pre-press said "nothing on the 'underground' for many episodes". So the pure fact that we saw something about the good doctor's "brother" kept my interest.
I've already watched it twice.
Also, Kate's not nearly as hot anymore...
Let's face it. Jack has the least interesting back-story of any of the survivors. His relationship with his father was shored up at the end of the season, and his marriage with the actress from Ed isn't exactly a page turner.
Lost is a great show because it rewards close readings. The fact that the man in the quarantine (or the other way around) was the good doctor's brother doesn't mean anything. It might as well have been a bunch of TV dinners. No, that would have actually been better because it had some meaning in the overall language of the show. I am sure the revelation will be tantalizing, but as a single story arc, the season premier failed.
Oh, and Kate is still quite hot.
